Joburg Theatre, BankservAfrica sign two year pantomime sponsorship deal

BankservAfrica today announced they are the official new sponsor of the 2011 and 2012 pantomimes, a staple of the Johannesburg Christmas theatre season.

Group marketing head Michael Rubenstein believes the arts are fundamental to the heritage of South Africans. “South Africa is possibly the only location outside of Britain to have built a similar pantomime reputation for itself. The 2011 pantomime, Cinderella, is the most successful story-to-stage of all time, both in South Africa and abroad, as it’s one of the most accessible to audiences as nearly everyone knows the story.”

As a company that believes in investing in talent, Rubenstein says this strategic partnership with Joburg Theatre aligns with the company’s pursuit of talent. “The pantomime brings together some of the best acting talents in SA, similarly BankservAfrica has been the unseen talent driving South Africa’s payment system, ensuring recognition for the country as a global payment system leader.”

Playing to over 70 000 patrons each year, the Joburg Theatre pantomime is one of the most sought after theatre tickets in South Africa, explains Joburg Theatre chief executive officer (CEO) and executive producer Bernard Jay.

Ex Springbok Captain and Founder of the Make A Difference (MAD) Foundation, Francois Pienaar has confirmed that The Chosen – The 2010 MTN Business Leading CEOs Council, via The Chosen Trust, has agreed to donate R600 000 it received as pledges from leading CEOs and business leaders to the MAD Foundation.

Several highly influential CEOs and business leaders were inspired by a controversial debate “You are rich they are poor – what if anything should you be doing about it”, with discussions centering around poverty alleviation during The 2010 MTN Business Leading CEOs Council in George, recently.

The high-powered group identified education as the number one priority. “We need to reach out to the youth at a young age and create opportunities for them to enter into emerging sectors of the economy,” says Angela Gahagan, Managing Executive of MTN Business.

There was also a clear consensus that business leaders need to spend more time listening to the youth. “We are fortunate to live in a country like South Africa, a country with huge potential but also daunting challenges,” said Francois Pienaar, a special guest at the council. “We all need to invest in the future of South Africa, to enable our children and their children to share in the wealth and beauty of this majestic land. The donation we received from The Chosen Trust will be the start of a legacy and we will identify four youngsters and provide for them financially from grade 7 through to grade 12, thus preparing them for scholarships for tertiary education.

SAB team up with KZN Department of Education to fit needy children with school shoes

The South African Breweries Ltd (SAB), in partnership with the KZN Department of Education, launched a project that will see 5 000 school children across the Province receive school shoes with specially developed reflective strips to promote pedestrian safety.

SAB, supported by the Bobs for Good foundation, developed a unique and innovative safety shoe with built-in reflective technology which serves to draw attention to children walking during twilight hours and in the dark as well as to make them more visible to drivers. The shoe is 100% developed and manufactured in South Africa. The equally distinctive shoe boxes include educational pedestrian safety tips for children and parents.

Children from four schools situated in the Pinetown education district were the recipients of the partnership’s first shoe drop. The MEC for Education, Mr Senzo Mchunu, SAB representatives and the Bobs for Good team, personally fitted approximately 200 children from Shembe, Mount Royal, Ethekweni and Siboniswe Primary schools with the specially made shoes.

Many corporate leaders believe that South Africa is facing a crisis of leadership, and delegates at the high-profile leadership conference echoed Danny Jordaan’s call for an “RDP for the soul.” Delegates from MTN Business, Absa, Microsoft SA, BMW and various other leading companies agreed that business leaders need to unite in their efforts to raise and promote the next generation of leaders. Kidz2Kidz Santa Shoebox Project

With the festive season sneaking up on us, we were pleasantly surprised when we came across this project via some recommendations from Twitter.

Sounds like a great project:

Kidz2Kidz Santa Shoebox Project is an inspiring community initiative, that collects uniquely personalized Christmas gifts for socially disadvantaged youth. Equally, the project is about parents teaching their own children the joy of giving.

A gift to be shared with a child from a distinctly vulnerable social background, who may never before have received a Christmas gift. The project is unique in that the donor knows the name, age, gender and residence of the child the gift is intended for

Room to Read partners with Twitter

As South Africa continues to slide down the United Nations’ literacy scale and the country struggles to bring to an end the public sector strikes that have interrupted learning for millions of its school-going children, Room to Read and its partner Twitter are kicking off an International Literacy Day campaign. The campaign is to raise awareness of illiteracy and to raise funds for the publication and distribution of a children’s book in South Africa.

Room to Read, a global non-profit organisation that empowers millions of children in the developing world through education, is partnering with Twitter to create a unique social media campaign to increase awareness of illiteracy on International Literacy Day, which celebrates the importance of learning around the globe.

Donations collected through this campaign during September will go towards the publication and distribution of the book. All efforts globally will be directed to this fund and will result in thousands of books to be shared with schools all over the country. Room to Read says its goal with the fund-raising campaign is to print 10,000 copies of “Unjani” or “How Are You”, a book written in Xhosa and English.
